Implant treatment is a surgical dental treatment method used to replace missing teeth or provide support to an toothless jaw area. This treatment involves placing screws made of titanium or titanium alloy into the jawbone, like the root of a tooth. Once the implants are integrated into the jawbone, prosthetic teeth or other restorative dental applications can be attached to them.
The basic steps of implant treatment are:
Evaluation and Planning: First, a dentist or oral surgeon evaluates the patient’s oral health and determines whether he or she is suitable for implant treatment. The condition of the jawbone is evaluated with radiographic images and other examinations. The treatment plan is created by determining the position, size and treatment process of the implant.
Implant Placement: During implant surgery, implant screws are placed in the jawbone with a minor surgical operation. These screws are usually made of titanium and are healed by the jawbone over time and integrated with the surrounding bone.
Healing Process (Osseointegration): After the implant screws are placed, the healing process begins. During this process, the jawbone surrounds the implant screws and these screws form a solid bond with the jawbone. This process can often take a few weeks or a few months.
Abutment Placement: After the healing process is completed, fasteners called abutments are placed on the implants. Abutments allow the attachment of prosthetic teeth or other restorations to implants.
Prosthetic Teeth Application: After the abutment is placed, prosthetic teeth or other restorative applications are connected to the implants and compensate for the patient’s missing teeth.
